• Don Fessenden • Season 1 • Episode 27

"Hey there, my fur-tastic friends! 🐾 Welcome back to The Monkey the Cat Podcast! I’m Monkey, your favorite talking cat, and today we’re going to slow things down a bit. Because today’s lesson is all about what happens when we take a deep breath and let our minds settle.

Our lesson today? A calm mind thinks more clearly.

When your thoughts are racing, your tail’s twitching, and everything feels like it’s going too fast—that’s when it’s hardest to think straight. But if you pause, breathe, and quiet the noise in your head? That’s when the real magic happens.

"Hey there, my fur-tastic friends! Welcome back to The Monkey the Cat Podcast! Let me tell you about the time I learned this lesson—during a game that got a little too competitive.""It was a sunny afternoon, and we had set up the ultimate brain game in the backyard—The Animal Trivia Challenge! Mom, our wise and organized accountant, made up the questions. Dad, our ever-patient teacher, was the judge. And the contestants? Me, Brooklyn, Teddy, and Olivff. I was ready. My whiskers were twitching with excitement. I wanted to win. The first question came:‘What’s the only mammal that can truly fly?’ I blurted out,‘Eagle!’ Everyone blinked. Olivff raised a paw.‘Bat.’ Dad smiled. That's correct! I grumbled.‘I knew that!’ Next question.‘How many legs does a spider have?’ I shouted,‘Six!’ Brooklyn barked,‘Eight!’ Dad nodded.‘Correct again.’ I could feel my ears burning. I was getting flustered, my brain spinning in circles. The more I wanted to win, the less I could think. I was rushing, second-guessing, and letting frustration take over. That’s when Mom whispered,‘Monkey… breathe.’ I looked at her.‘Huh?’ She smiled.‘Just take a breath. Let your mind settle. A calm mind thinks more clearly.’""I took her advice. I sat down, closed my eyes, and took a slow, deep breath. In… and out. I let go of trying to be the fastest. I focused on being the clearest. The next question came:‘Which ocean is the largest?’ I paused. Let my mind think. Then answered,‘The Pacific Ocean.’ Dad grinned. That's Correct!’ From that point on, I answered fewer questions—but I got more right. I didn’t shout. I didn’t stress. I just stayed calm and let my mind do the work. And you know what? I didn’t win the game—but I felt so much better. And I learned a lesson that was even more important than trivia: When your brain feels like a tangled ball of yarn, sometimes the best thing to do is just… breathe." Because a calm mind doesn’t just think more clearly—it makes your heart feel better too. Thanks for tuning in to The Monkey the Cat Podcast!
